Mathematical modelling for building design

Turn an engineering question into a calculation model. Understand how geometry, materials and operating conditions affect a building, and which option deserves further development.

How do you decide before construction?

When several proposals seem equally convincing, modelling compares them against defined criteria. Mathematical modelling for construction connects physical processes with design parameters: heat transfer, airflow, pressure and energy use. We select the model scale around the decision, from a single junction to a building or an urban quarter.

What we assess

  • Problem definition: identify the decision, variables and performance indicators to compare.
  • Preparation of geometry, material properties, loads and boundary conditions for the selected physical model.
  • Scenario studies and sensitivity analysis to understand which inputs have the greatest effect.

Inputs for the calculation

Building description and design stage, proposed options, plans, sections or a digital model. Engineering system studies also need equipment characteristics and operating schedules. We help identify the relevant information in existing documentation.

What your design team receives

An agreed modelling approach, scenario results and a comparison of performance indicators. We explain which changes affect the outcome, which inputs are decisive and what to carry into the next design stage.

Illustrative study

Choosing a façade and systems concept

A design team has two glazing options and two ventilation schedules. We assess combinations and compare their thermal loads and system requirements. The façade and building services teams can then discuss their decisions using the same assumptions.

Questions about the study

Do you need a complete BIM model?

Not always. Plans and sections are sufficient for some tasks. What matters is that the inputs describe the physical process and proposed design with appropriate detail.

Can we start with a small study?

Yes. A single junction, one operating condition or two alternatives can be a useful starting point. The model scope should follow the decision that the calculation supports.
