HKN / Temperature fields

Temperature field and thermal bridge calculations

A flat wall and a real façade junction behave differently. We calculate temperature fields to assess junctions, fixings and mixed-material assemblies before construction details are finalised.

Where does the detail lose heat?

For a developer, this is a question of comfort and operating costs. For an architect or structural engineer, it is a way to select insulation thickness, thermal breaks and junction geometry on a clear basis. We assess window reveals, parapets, balcony slabs and other details where a one-dimensional wall calculation is insufficient.

What we assess

  • Steady-state two- and three-dimensional temperature fields, heat fluxes and local thermal bridges.
  • Comparison of insulation, thermal breaks, fixings and junction geometry using consistent boundary conditions.
  • Minimum internal surface temperatures and, with specified humidity, comparison against the dew-point temperature.

Inputs for the calculation

Detail drawings or a model, dimensions, material layers and thermal conductivity. Air temperatures, humidity, heat-transfer conditions and assessment criteria are agreed for the particular building.

What your design team receives

Model definition and boundary conditions, temperature and heat-flux maps, values at selected sections, option comparisons and recommendations for refining the detail. These results support coordination between architects, structural engineers and façade specialists.

Illustrative study

Floor slab meeting a façade

Compare the original detail with continuous insulation or a thermal break. Assess how the internal surface temperature and the heat flow near the slab change. Use the comparison to select a detail for further development.

Questions about the study

Is insulation thickness enough to assess a detail?

Thickness matters, but a junction also requires its geometry, all material conductivities and heat-transfer conditions. A metal fixing or slab edge can substantially alter the local temperature field.

Can you assess an existing design detail?

Yes. We start with the original design and agreed criteria. If a problem area appears, we define changes and compare them on a consistent calculation basis.
